Confronting Burnout and Workaholism

Take a Break book for blog on pastor burnout

Let’s talk heart to heart. As a pastor coach and peer in the cause of Christ, I understand the pressures you face and the propensity to slip into workaholism and burnout. Despite the joy of our jobs, pastors are not immune to these occupational hazards. They lurk in the shadows waiting to pounce when we least expect.

Paul’s letter to the Galatians comes to mind. He encourages us not to become weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9). But we must remember while God’s work is never done, we are human. And we have limitations.

So let’s explore the top three dangers of workaholism and the three major signs of burnout pastors face to better equip ourselves to ‘run with perseverance the race marked out for us’ (Hebrews 12:1).

The Dangers of Workaholism

1. Erosion of Personal Relationships:

Workaholism may lead to the neglect of personal relationships. My wife reminded me of that last night as I brought my laptop home—again. As the adage says, ‘Nobody on their deathbed ever said, I wish I had spent more time at the office.’ As pastors, we must model healthy relationships with God and others. But when work overtakes all else, our relationships suffer the most.

2. Impaired Physical Health:

The body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). We know and teach that truth. But do we take it to heart? Overworking can lead to numerous health issues, including stress, fatigue, and even chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Guarding our health is a sacred duty to honor the life God has given us. So if you’re not prioritizing your physical health and well-being, today would be an excellent time to take a small step in that direction.

3. Spiritual Dryness:

Ironically, overwork in ministry can lead to spiritual dryness in our lives. We may see our pastoral duties and tasks as ends in themselves and forget the ultimate purpose of our ministry, which is to glorify God. Without time for personal devotion and replenishment, we risk operating in our strength rather than God’s (Exodus 33:14). Simply put, when we work as if it depends on us, we pay an unnecessary price.

The Signs of Burnout

1. Chronic Fatigue:

You’re always tired physically, emotionally, and spiritually. You find yourself dreading tasks you once enjoyed, and your zest for ministry starts to wane. It feels like you’re running on fumes.

2. Increased Isolation:

When burnout begins to set in, you may find yourself distancing from others. This includes avoiding social gatherings, minimizing necessary pastoral duties, or cutting off from friends and family.

3. Diminished Sense of Accomplishment:

Despite your hard work, you feel you’re not achieving anything. You may start doubting your effectiveness and feel like a failure. Negative self-talk begins to hijack your sense of self-worth and value.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Are there warning signs of workaholism or burnout in my life?
  2. How does my current work rhythm impact my relationships, health, and spiritual life?
  3. How do I discern between the Holy Spirit’s leading and my drive to overwork?

Immediate Action Steps:

1. Seek Balance:

Balance work, rest, and play. Implement a weekly Sabbath – a day completely free from work-related tasks.

2. Foster Community:

Do not isolate yourself. Foster meaningful relationships, both within and outside of the church community.

3. Seek Help:

Engage in regular therapy or counseling. And please do not shy away from seeking medical help if needed.

My friend, Jesus instructs us to ‘come apart and rest awhile’ (Mark 6:31) lest in our doing we ‘come apart.’ We must tread this path wisely, caring for ourselves and each other. We are not in this alone.

Remember, Christ assures us, ‘Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest’ (Matthew 11:28). Lean into His grace. It is sufficient, even, and especially when we are weak. ◼︎
